Celebrating 70 years of Service

On March 29, 2014, current and past Altrusans of Atlanta, GA, and District guests celebrated their 70 years of service to the community. Altrusa International of Atlanta, GA was organized on March 23, 1938, with ten members. Mrs. Nancy Hatch of Milwaukee, WI, Field Secretary of Altrusa International presided at the organizational meeting. Ms. Louise Vaughn served as the president of the group.

From 1938 to 1943, the group struggled to get the twenty members necessary to receive a charter and become affiliated with Altrusa International, Inc. The women were busy with a variety of service projects including. The American Women’s Volunteer Service Program organized in 1940 that provided women volunteers to help with home-front support of the nation during World War II.

Under the leadership of Emma Billingsley (president 1943-44), the goal of reaching membership charter strength with the addition of twelve new members was achieved. A charter, dated March 29, 1944, was presented to Ms. Billingsley and the members.

In the 70 years since, Atlanta Altrusans have been actively locally in the metro Atlanta community and at the District organization level. Three District Governors, Vera Atkins, Vera Ireland and Betty Brooks, have been members of the Atlanta Club. Other Atlanta members have served as district officers and district committee chairs and continue to be involved at the District level.

Recent service projects have focused on literacy in the Sandy Springs area with the Ison Springs Elementary School, Lake Forrest Elementary School and participating in SS Reads. Other organizations supported by Atlanta are the Community Assistance Center and the Sandy Springs Mission.
